ITA Airways takes delivery of four Airbus aircraft in one week – Business Traveller

ITA Airways has provided an update on its aircraft renewal programme, with more than 50 per cent of its fleet now comprising new generation planes. The carrier recently took delivery of four Airbus aircraft in one week – an A330-900 owned by ITA Airways, as well as leased A321neo, A320neo and A220-100 aircraft. The new additions means that 44 out of the airline’s fleet of 87 aircraft are now considered “new generation”. Shortly after ITA Airways launched operations in October 2021, the flag carrier announced an order for 28 Airbus narrow and wide-bodied aircraft, including seven A220s, 11 A320 neos and ten A330 neo aircraft. Recent A220 deliveries have enabled ITA to ramp up its services to and from London City airport, with the introduction of a fourth daily Milan Linate frequency, and ...

EasyJet confirms order for 157 Airbus aircraft – Business Traveller

EasyJet has confirmed a firm order for 157 A320neo Family aircraft, following shareholder approval on Tuesday. The carrier will receive 56 A320neo and 101 A321neo aircraft between FY29 and FY34, the plans for which we initially reported in October. EasyJet says that this ensures it has “a supply of future delivery slots… to retain its current scale through replacing aircraft leaving the fleet” and enables the carrier to “execute its growth strategy”. An additional 100 purchase rights will also enable the airline the opportunity to further grow, depending on when they are delivered. An existing 35 A320neo aircraft already on order will also be converted into larger A321neo aircraft. EasyJet says this decision will enable “continued growth opportunities in slot constrained airports”. Johan...

It also includes 60 future purchasing options for the MAX 8, 20 options for the A220, as well as 40 options for Airbus A320s. The order is Lufthansa's first buy of Boeing narrow body planes in about 30 years, as well as its first purchase of the 737 MAX model. The airline was a launch customer for an older version of the Boeing 737 in the late 1960s, but has maintained an all-Airbus single-aisle fleet after phasing out the 737 in 2016. It has continued to buy Boeing wide body aircraft, with a backlog that includes 787 Dre...

Grounded fleet: Pratt & Whitney engine troubles mount for IndiGo

NEW DELHI: Jet engine-maker Pratt & Whitney (PW) has informed IndiGo the latest powder metal contamination issue could see "aircraft on ground (AoG) in the range of mid-thirties in the fourth quarter (January-March 2024) due to accelerated engine removals". Already, almost 50 IndiGo AirbusA320neo (new engine option) have been grounded for several months, awaiting replacement GTF engines from PW.This means that over 80 IndiGo planes could be grounded early next year. Any more engines going bust - a common occurrence with PW GTF engines that power the A320neos - will add to this number. Acapacity crunch, which IndiGo is trying to address by getting as many planes on lease as possible, could lead to a spike in airfares as seen earlier this summer after GoAir collapsed. The GTF engines hav...

Lufthansa partners with Airbus and Munich airport for Power-To-Liquid fuel research – Business Traveller

Lufthansa has signed a Letter of Intent with organisations including Airbus and Munich airport for “a broad-based research collaboration on Power-to-Liquid (PtL) aviation fuels”. The agreement – which also involves MTU Aero Engines and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) – is intended to accelerate the technology selection, market introduction and industrial scaling of PtL aviation fuels in Germany. PtL is considered by some to be the next generation of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, using regeneratively generated electricity, water and CO2 from the atmosphere to create a syngas from which sustainable aviation fuel can be produced. Lufthansa said that the collaboration would also include the testing of pure PtL (ie: without the addition of fossil kerosene) in order to gain knowledge for the a...

Iberia to increase A320 hand luggage capacity with new Airbus L bins – Business Traveller

Iberia has signed an agreement with Airbus to retrofit its fleet of A320 neo aircraft with the manufacturer’s new L bins. The new overhead luggage bins were launched by Airbus earlier this year, and allow for the vertical loading of carry-on roller bags, resulting in a 60 per cent increase in capacity, of three extra bags per bin. The L bins have been designed to share common parts with existing Airspace XL bins, and can be retrofitted in three to five days. Iberia currently has 16 A320 neo aircraft in its fleet, and will begin the retrofit project at the start of 2025. Lufthansa was recently announced as the first retrofit customer for the L bins, as part of works to refurbish a large portion of its A320 fleet. Lufthansa to refurbish A320s with new seats, USB ports and tablet holders C...

EasyJet plans order for up to 257 Airbus aircraft – Business Traveller

EasyJet has unveiled plans to order up to 257 new aircraft, as it targets annual profits of more than £1 billion in the medium-term. The low-cost carrier said it had entered into conditional arrangements with Airbus to secure the delivery of 157 aircraft (56 A320 neos and 101 A321 neos) between FY29 and FY34, as well as options on a further 100 jets. The deal would total $19.9 billion at list prices, although easyJet said that the actual price “would be substantially lower because of certain price concessions granted by Airbus”. The agreement is subject to shareholder approval, which the airline hopes to complete by the end of the year. EasyJet currently already has an existing order book for 158 Airbus aircraft for delivery by 2028, with the most recent order for 56 A320 neo Family airc...
