In November of 2016, just eight days after Donald J. Trump won the U.S. Presidency, a relatively unknown Black historian, Ibram X. Kendi, received the National Book Award for a nearly six-hundred-page tome titled “Stamped from the Beginning,” a book claiming to trace the history of racist ideas in the U.S. In that moment, Kendi’s book seemed to offer some explanation for the shock of Trump’s victory: centuries of American racism and decades of toxic backlash politics.
