Hotel Hassler has a stately and imposing facade on the prestigious Via Sistina. The location atop the Spanish Steps puts guests conveniently close to the city’s major monuments and fashion district.

After entering the lobby, we saw the concierge desk immediately to the left.

A reproduction of the bronze Capitoline Wolf greets guests in the lobby. The statue represents the mythical she-wolf that suckled the twins Romulus and Remus, who went on to found the city of Rome.

The cozy Salone Eva is just off the lobby. While libations weren’t being served during our summer visit, it’s open for light meals and drinks in the winter.

The intimate (five stools) Hassler Bar is open from October through April and serves classic cocktails.

The Michelin-starred Imàgo restaurant sits on the hotel’s sixth floor and offers panoramic views to go with the exquisite cuisine. We learned during our visit that the wine cellar was recently expanded, emphasizing rare Italian and international bottles.

The late owner Roberto Wirth loved turtles and collected all kinds of decorative items representing the animals. This one sits on the bar counter at Imàgo.

Standard double rooms may be petite in size, but they come with marble bathrooms and a walk-in closet. Wirth insisted that every guest should have a place to put their suitcase, no matter their room category.

Marble bathrooms come outfitted with the hotel’s own label of toiletries, called Amorvero.

Some rooms come with a balcony. Each balcony includes a table and chairs, an ideal breakfast spot to watch the world go by.

Suites feature unique decor, such as wood-paneled walls, rich textiles and antiques.

12/16

We were particularly impressed by these ornate doors that lead from the living area to the bedroom in one of the hotel’s suites.

13/16

Comfortable beds and exquisite fabrics make the suites elegant places to lay your head.

14/16

The final suite on our tour, this room makes the Trinità dei Monti church seem within arm’s reach.

15/16

All guests can enjoy the hotel’s panoramas. The seventh-floor terrace is an excellent place to enjoy a drink or light meal with incredible views of the city’s terracotta rooftops.

Rome is the best place to travel alone
