Lulu Wang’s The Farewell was one of the best films of 2019, so it’s only natural to be incredibly excited to see what she brings to the small screen. In the Expats, based on Janice Y. K. Lee’s novel The Expatriates, Wang directs Nicole Kidman as Margaret, an American woman in 2014 Hong Kong with her husband (Brian Tee) who experiences a familial tragedy. Sarayu Blue and Ji-young Yoo also play American women in Hong Kong whose lives are entangled with Margaret’s and each must explore their ownselves after that tragedy. (Streaming January 26.)
