Live updates on House speaker race, Scalise nomination after postponed vote

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) appeared to make little progress in building support for his speakership bid during a lengthy meeting Thursday with fellow House Republicans. The House convened only briefly before Republicans huddled behind closed doors in a session that several described as unproductive. Scalise vowed to stay in the race afterward. On Wednesday, Scalise narrowly topped Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in a conference-wide vote. But Scalise remains well short of the 217 votes he would need to be elected in a vote on the House floor.
