Qantas confirms more fuel-efficient A220s – Business Traveller

Australia’s Qantas Group has finalised an incremental order for nine Airbus A220-300 domestic and short-haul regional aircraft, bringing its total backlog for the type to 29 aircraft. The A220 was originally selected by Qantas as part of a major fleet replacement programme announced in May 2022, which also included orders for the A321XLR and A350-1000. Qantas will take delivery of its first A220 at the end of this year and will operate the type primarily on its extensive domestic route network. Combining latest generation technologies and a wider, quieter cabin, the A220 can fly further than other aircraft in its size category, while also bringing a step-change reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. The A220s will mostly replace Boeing 737-800 aircraft at oneworld member Qantas...

‘The scenery bursts into life’: making Scotland wild again | Scotland holidays

Birdcall breaks the morning silence as I potter past the stretching Scots pines and ancient oaks of Dundreggan, the rewilded estate of the charity Trees for Life in Glenmoriston in the Scottish Highlands. Woodpeckers drum and cuckoos call from on high, while around the trail, finches and thrushes flutter from tree to tree, avoiding beard lichens dripping off the branches.ScotlandI’m the first one out in the forest this morning (or the first human, at least), a feat easily achieved when you have spent the night here. The Dundreggan Rewilding Centre, the first of its kind in the world, opened in April and includes An Spiris, an L-shaped accommodation block with 20 double/twin rooms and a spacious communal area.“Nature shouldn’t be exclusive,” Laurelin Cummins-Fraser, the director of the rew...

The Tropicana, a Relic on the Las Vegas Strip, Could Be Demolished

In an interview, Mr. Kim said that the renovation was ultimately an opportunity to grow employment.“The Trop is obviously iconic, but it is, really, in a lot of ways, economically obsolete,” Mr. Kim said, noting that the 35-acre site was worth more than the current economic capacity of the casino. “It literally is part of the glitz and glamour of Vegas, but it hasn’t been that for decades,” he added, noting that when it came to signing a deal to develop the site for a baseball stadium, it was a “no-brainer.”The Culinary Workers Union Local 226, which represents tens of thousands of workers across Nevada, has vowed to protect employees of the Tropicana. “The unit can help them find work during the remodel or the rebuild, and these workers have to be hired back first,” Ted Pappageorge, the ...

42,600 new commercial jets needed to satisfy global demand over next 20 years – Business Traveller

Boeing has published its annual Commercial Market Outlook (CMO), ahead of the return of the Paris Airshow this week. The manufacturer is projecting global demand for 42,595 new commercial jet aircraft by 2042, valued at $8 trillion. Single-aisle aircraft are forecast to account for more than 75 per cent of all new deliveries, totalling around 32,000 planes, with widebody jets making up nearly 20 per cent of deliveries or around 7,400 planes, and freight aircraft accounting for the remainder of the total. Boeing said that around half of all deliveries will be used to replace older jets. Key forecasts of the CMO include Asia-Pacific representing more than 40 per cent of global demand over the next 20 years, with half of that total coming from China. This compares to North America and Europ...

‘Blissful and extraordinary’: readers’ favourite places in Europe | Europe holidays

Lakeside beaches, FranceLake Vassivière in the Limousin has something for everyone. We found one of France’s largest artificial lakes while on a donkey-trekking holiday (but that’s another story!). The lake has five lovely sandy beaches with safe swim areas, beach cafes and kayak hire. There are walks and cycle paths, but the real gem is the lake’s island, with its lighthouse, a sculpture park and a chateau that is now a restaurant. Access is via a footbridge, free water taxis or by canoe. We stayed in a fabulous yurt on a donkey farm three miles away (about €400 for a week). Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore celebrates 90th anniversary of the Clifford Pier – Business Traveller

Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore is celebrating the 90th anniversary of the city-state’s historic Clifford Pier landmark this month. The former landing point was built in 1933 and named after Sir Hugh Charles Clifford, Governor of the Straits Settlements. It now serves as an events space for the hotel, and in tribute to the red lanterns which once illuminated the pier for approaching boats, Fullerton has reinstated the iconic red glass on the pier’s shoreward-facing lamps. The hotel is also running a photo exhibition until the end of July, entitled From Port to Icon: Celebrating 90 Years of Clifford Pier, highlighting “a series of personal stories from Singaporeans sharing fond memories of the pier in its early days, paying tribute to its treasured past and celebrating its continuous develo...

Height of cool: mountain retreats in the Austrian Tirol | Travel

A wooden swimming jetty juts into a lake of deepest emerald green. In the distance white-sailed dinghies skitter across the water, propelled by a gentle breeze coming down from the mountains. This is Achensee, the largest lake in the Austrian Tirol. And if you endured last summer’s heatwave on a sticky and crowded British beach or watched the skies turn red above the Med as the mercury nudged the high 40s, the chances are you found yourself fantasising about a scene just like this.Falling to earth: Dalfazer waterfall at Achensee lake. Photograph: Getty ImagesI’d love to say we jumped off that jetty into the lake, but it’s not just the colour that’s glacial, so we retreat to the more temperate waters of the rooftop infinity pool at Atoll Achensee. This gleaming lakeside leisure complex has...
