‘It stands over us like a giant’s dining table’: on the trail of the UK’s ancient stones | Cornwall holidays

Up on Cornwall’s Penwith Moors time takes a strange quality. Here the landscape is a morass of knotted bracken and bristly gorse, a soft marigold tinge signalling warmer summer days. A grey smudge of cloud sags on the horizon and the wind whirs like white noise, a low and disorientating murmur. The topography is a palimpsest, with working farms etched over ruinous mines and prehistoric settlements. And at its heart is a scattering of ancient stones, the enigmatic quoits, barrows and stone circles that have captivated and confounded societies for millennia. It’s an enchanting place just to wander, but to help me dive deeper into the mysteries of the moors, I am meeting artists and stone enthusiasts Lally MacBeth and Matthew Shaw. Almost immediately I feel underdressed in hiking boots primed...

The Best Place to Drink Is the Emptiest Bar in the City

A decade on, I talk about this when I see old friends at hotel bars. It’s the kind of conversation we wouldn’t be able to have at a dark place full of thrum, or a pop-song bar with ironic cocktails. I like hotel bars because I want to try to hear voices; not the little barks and repetitions shuffled around in loud music and crowd clamor — that simultaneity of sound I no longer tune into. Not color patter about our fellow drinkers. Instead, I want a real connection, a friendly intimacy. In a leather half-booth, in the emptiest bar in the city, there is no impetus to be decorous. The sorrows we pour out won’t get absorbed in cacophony. In all the world there’s only us.Hotel bars are the mudrooms of the city, a place by the entrance, a liminality, where most people linger but briefly, at the...

Venice to Mantua: by bike and boat along Italy’s glorious Po valley | Italy holidays

Ten years ago, while exploring the Renaissance city of Mantua in Lombardy, I bumped into a bunch of cyclists embarking on a “bike and barge” trip all the way to Venice. It sounded like the perfect way to hit the quiet backroads of the little-known Polesine region, which surrounds the Po River and stretches to the Adriatic. Finally, here I am, joining the trip (though in the opposite direction), boarding the Ave Maria, which is moored behind Palladio’s iconic Redentore church on the island of Giudecca. The once rust-encrusted 42-metre transport boat was saved from the scrapheap by local tour operator Girolibero and transformed into a very comfortable 17-cabin floating hotel. My 32 fellow passengers are a cosmopolitan crowd: Britons, Berliners, Americans, Canadians and New Zealanders, rangin...

Inside the New Yowie Hotel in Philadelphia

When she was growing up, Shannon Maldonado wanted to be a fashion designer. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology, Ms. Maldonado spent a decade on the design teams for several brands in New York, including Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren and American Eagle. But by her early 30s, Ms. Maldonado said, she had become uninspired by her career. While traveling around the world for work, she liked hunting for unconventional souvenirs in hotel gift shops (her first purchase was a speckled ceramic pen holder in Japan). She started to wonder what it would be like to choose such items for shops at the Ace or Standard hotels. In 2015, Ms. Maldonado, now 39, recalled thinking, “What if I start a modern gift shop?”Soon after, she started a website, Yowie, that sold housewares, like cerami...

The 9 Best All-Inclusive Resorts for Teens in 2023

All-inclusive vacations offer an enticing getaway for everyone, but many all-inclusive hotels and resorts are lacking when it comes to activities for older kids. Most options have amazing pools, golden beaches, and round-the-clock food and drink options, but they often fail to entertain the 12- to 17-year-old crowd with stimulating activities that keep their idle hands – and minds – busy.Fortunately, some all-inclusive resorts go out of the way to offer attractive deals and packages along with innovative teen-friendly activities. While some of the best all-inclusive resorts for teens are in tropical locales with beach activities galore, others are in the mountains where older kids and teens can get their hands dirty and stay busy with outdoor recreation and sports. If you're planning to tr...

Jump to:Visitors enjoying the afternoon sun in the Jardin de Luxembourg.Credit...Joann Pai for The New York TimesThis floral-focused stroll in Paris is the favorite of Sandra Sigman, the celebrated florist and author of the book “French Blooms,” about the distinctive French style of flower arrangement. Just short of three miles, it weaves through the gardens, green spaces and flower shops of the 6th and 7th arrondissements.“I love the French approach to gardens,” said Ms. Sigman, 56. ”Although the spaces themselves are quite formal in their design, that doesn’t stop people from relaxing and enjoying their beauty.”Start at Champ de Mars. The park surrounding the Eiffel Tower is always filled with blooms, and if you get there early, you’ll miss most of the crowds. From the park, head southe...
