GEORGETOWN, Ky. (FOX 56) — This Georgetown boy believes it is better to give than to receive and his actions prove it.

Instead of asking for birthday presents, an 11-year-old boy named Gavin Maynard asked for donations. This is the second year that Gavin is using his birthday to donate it all to a charity.

Gavin’s mom, Kim Maynard, said, “Basically, when people ask what Gavin wants for his birthday, we just say he’s collecting money for donations to donate to a charity.”

This year, Gavin chose Brady’s K-9 fund, which raises money to have Kevlar vests made for police dogs to protect them at work. After he collected the money, he donated it to the Georgetown police department.

“I just like to help, including others, especially the dogs, from them being brave of what they’re doing and protecting our city,” Gavin said.

This isn’t the first time he has put others first; last year, Gavin donated his birthday money to Toys for Tots.

“We got to see the fireman; we bought toys and brought it to fire station. Gave it to them and then they went around to give out the toys that we got to them,” Gavin said.

Kim said her family raised her to give back and now it’s important to instill that in her son.

“Being able to, you know, make a difference in the world and so I’m happy that he is so willing and generous with, you know, what he does get and is able to help provide to others, makes me very happy,” Kim said.

“He loves the volunteer. He’s very selfless in that regard and he just loves helping our people,” said Gavin’s dad, Brad Maynard.

Gavin said he hopes every birthday he can make it more special than the last by continuing to donate.

“I think it would probably be more of a tradition, but I would still like toys.

Gavin was able to donate nearly $300 to help the K-9 unit at Georgetown police department. He also said he couldn’t have done it without all the support from his friends.
