Donald Trump plans to meet with Argentina President-elect Javier Milei

Former President Donald Trump said he’s making plans to head to Argentina to meet President-elect Javier Milei, the president-elect’s office said Thursday.

No date for the trip has been given, but Mr. Milei’s inauguration is set for Dec. 10.

“The president-elect received a call last night from the former president of the United States, Donald Trump, who congratulated him and pointed out his triumph by a wide margin in last Sunday’s election had a great impact on a global scale,” a statement from Mr. Milei’s office said.

A Buenos Aires journalist was the first to report the news when he wrote on X Thursday that the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Eduardo Bolsonaro, “facilitated” the conversation between Mr. Milei and Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump celebrated Mr. Milei’s win Tuesday with a video posted on Truth Social.

“A very special congratulations to Javier Milei on a great race for president of Argentina,” he said. “I am very proud of you. You will turn your country around and truly Make Argentina Great Again!”

Mr. Milei has expressed his admiration of Mr. Trump in the past. During a Fox News interview this year, Mr. Milei called on the former president to “continue with his fight against socialism, because he’s one of the few who fully understood that the battle is against socialism, that the battle is against the statists.”

Mr. Milei is a self-described “anarcho-capitalist” and libertarian. Some of his social positions align him with conservative Republicans in the United States.

His conversation with Mr. Trump was held just hours after President Biden congratulated him. The White House said the two leaders discussed ways of building a strong relationship between their respective countries.
