Joe Biden Ruined Supreme Court Nominations

Your editorial celebrating the life of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor shows how far we have come—or how low we have sunk—since her appointment to the Supreme Court in 1981 (“Sandra Day O’Connor, 1930-2023,” Dec. 2). She was confirmed unanimously by the Senate. It is difficult—no, impossible—to think of any nominee for the Supreme Court who could be unanimously confirmed now. In 1987, when he was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee while simultaneously running for president, Joe Biden presided over the confirmation hearings of Judge Robert Bork. These proceedings were a vile farce. Perhaps Mr. Biden was distracted, given that he was in the midst of the Neil Kinnock plagiarism scandal. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Judges Bat Down Donald Trump’s Presidential-Immunity Arguments

Updated Dec. 1, 2023 9:12 pm ETWASHINGTON—Former President Donald Trump’s efforts to claim absolute immunity to ward off criminal and civil legal actions against him were rebuffed twice Friday in separate legal decisions.U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, presiding over Trump’s election-interference case brought by special counsel Jack Smith, rejected the former president’s bid to have that case tossed out on the grounds that he enjoys “absolute immunity” from criminal prosecution. In court papers, the former president’s lawyers argued that his efforts to challenge his November 2020 election loss had been “within the ‘outer perimeter’ of his official responsibility” as president.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Why It’s Obvious Iran Approved Hamas’s Attack

Shortly after Hamas’s assault on Israel, The Wall Street Journal, relying on Hamas sources, reported that the Islamic Republic of Iran had green-lit the Oct. 7 attack. U.S. government officials said they don’t have evidence of Iran’s involvement, and Tehran itself claims that Hamas is an independent actor. But American and Israeli intelligence agencies’ lack of evidence isn’t surprising, since they also failed to predict Hamas’s attack. Those who understand the Islamic Republic’s regime find it hard to believe that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei didn’t give his consent. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
