Biden’s ‘Proportionate’ Defense of U.S. Troops Has Failed

On Christmas Day, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that U.S. military forces conducted “proportionate” strikes against Iraqi militias that attacked and wounded American service members (“Biden Endangers U.S. Troops,” Review & Outlook, Dec. 27). The statement defines the equivocating, timid and wholly unsuccessful strategy of the Biden administration, but also of successive administrations for years. After nearly daily attacks on U.S. forces over months, resulting in dozens of wounded Americans, “proportionate” ought to have been revealed as having no deterrent value. It is past time for the U.S. to signal to those who attack our forces that they will pay disproportionately and severely. Continued attacks will see increasingly robust spankings. In this case, if the Iraqi governm...

Kim Jong Un’s 2024 Wish List: More Nuclear Bombs, Spy-Satellite Launches

SEOUL—Throughout 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for the expansion of his country’s weapons arsenal. This year, he plans more of the same. Pyongyang plans to carry out three more spy-satellite launches and accelerate nuclear-weapons production in 2024, Kim told top North Korean officials in recent year-end meetings. The 39-year-old dictator ruled out reunification with South Korea. And he echoed prior dissatisfactions with the U.S., urging his country to prepare for an armed conflict that could occur at any time. Copyright ©2024 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Pardon Lt. Ridge Alkonis – WSJ

Japan helped mend a diplomatic sore before Christmas when Tokyo transferred an imprisoned U.S. Navy lieutenant back into American hands. But this international incident isn’t over, and the outcome matters to U.S. troops wondering if they’re vulnerable to rough justice while stationed abroad.Lt. Ridge Alkonis was assigned to a Navy destroyer in Japan in 2021 when he fell unconscious while driving, and two Japanese nationals died after the attendant crash outside a restaurant. Lt. Alkonis maintains he experienced a medical emergency—acute mountain sickness—while driving his wife and children back from a daytime hike. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Hapag-Lloyd to Continue Avoiding Red Sea Despite U.S.-Led Naval Deployment

German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd said it will continue to avoid the Red Sea because it considers the area is still too dangerous despite the U.S. and allies deploying naval ships to deter further strikes by Houthi militants.“We continuously assess the situation and plan a next review on Friday,” a spokesperson of the German shipping giant said Wednesday. It will continue to reroute its ships via the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Iran Adds to Pressure on U.S. With Nuclear Program Acceleration

Updated Dec. 26, 2023 6:06 pm ETIran has tripled production of nearly weapons-grade uranium in a move likely to deepen its confrontation with the West as Tehran helps allied militias to attack Israel and U.S. forces in the region. Iran’s decision to triple its production rate of near-weapons-grade uranium marks the collapse of quiet diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran to ease tensions. It comes amid a proliferation of flashpoints between the U.S. and Iran, whose proxies have repeatedly traded fire with U.S. forces in the Middle East since the bloody conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted on Oct. 7. U.S. and European navies are also shooting down drones launched by the Iran-backed Houthis in the Red Sea. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 879...

Ukraine’s Crimea Offensive – WSJ

The current narrative about the war in Ukraine is that Russia has regained the offensive and is making gains in the east. But that’s not how it looked Tuesday on the bridge of the Novocherkassk, a Russian warship struck by Ukrainian cruise missiles.Online videos posted by Ukrainian authorities showed a large explosion on the amphibious landing ship. Russia’s defense ministry acknowledged a Ukrainian missile had “damaged” the Novocherkassk, in addition to killing one and wounding two, the state news agency Tass reported.
